Asthma Triggers at Home: A Room-by-Room Checklist

Practical, low-cost changes in the bedroom, kitchen, and living areas that reduce asthma flares in humid Florida homes.

By Rezia Divaker, MDJuly 12, 2026Medically reviewed July 12, 2026

Reducing exposure at home is one of the most effective ways to lower flare frequency, and most of the changes cost little or nothing.

The bedroom

  • Allergen-proof covers on the mattress and pillows.
  • Wash bedding weekly in hot water.
  • Keep stuffed animals to a minimum and wash them regularly.
  • Run a HEPA air purifier and keep pets out of the room.

Kitchen and bathrooms

  • Use exhaust fans to control moisture and reduce mold growth.
  • Fix leaks quickly; Florida humidity turns small leaks into mold fast.
  • Store food sealed and take out trash regularly to discourage pests.

Whole-house habits

  • Change HVAC filters every one to three months.
  • Keep indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent.
  • No smoking or vaping in the home or car, ever.
  • Choose fragrance-free cleaning products and avoid air fresheners and scented candles.

Track what helps

Keep a simple symptom log for a few weeks after making changes. Patterns you spot at home are some of the most useful information you can bring to a follow-up visit.
