Flu Shots for Kids: Timing, Safety, and What to Expect

When to schedule the annual flu vaccine in Central Florida, who needs two doses, and how to manage common side effects.

Influenza season in Florida can start early and run long. Annual vaccination is the single best way to reduce the odds of a miserable week at home, missed school, and hospital visits.

When to schedule

  • Aim for September or October, before local activity picks up.
  • Vaccination later in the season is still worthwhile.
  • Protection takes about two weeks to build.

Who needs two doses

Children between 6 months and 8 years who are receiving the flu vaccine for the first time need two doses given at least four weeks apart. After that first season, one dose a year is enough.

Common side effects

  • Soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site.
  • Low-grade fever, tiredness, or achiness for a day or two.
  • Serious reactions are rare; the vaccine cannot cause influenza.

Helping the visit go smoothly

  • Be matter-of-fact rather than apologetic when you explain the shot.
  • Nursing, a bottle, or a comfort item helps infants.
  • Distraction with a phone, book, or counting game helps older children.
  • Bring a hoodie or short sleeves for easy arm access.
