Making the Most of Your Child's Well Visit

What happens at a well-child visit by age, how to prepare your questions, and why annual visits matter even for healthy kids.

Well visits are the appointments where we catch things early, and they work best when families come prepared.

What happens at every well visit

  • Growth measurements plotted on your child's own curve.
  • A full head-to-toe physical examination.
  • Vision, hearing, and age-appropriate developmental screening.
  • Immunization review and administration.
  • Discussion of sleep, nutrition, behavior, safety, and school.
  • Mental health screening starting in the preteen years.

How to prepare

  • Write down your top three questions and bring the list.
  • Note any teacher or daycare concerns.
  • Bring records from any specialists or urgent care visits.
  • Bring current medications, including vitamins.
  • For teens, plan for a few minutes of confidential one-on-one time.

Visit frequency

  • Infancy: newborn, 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, and 12 months.
  • Toddler and preschool: 15, 18, 24, and 30 months, then annually.
  • School age and adolescence: once a year, every year.

Why healthy kids still need visits

Many of the most treatable problems, including scoliosis, vision changes, elevated blood pressure, anxiety, and growth issues, cause no symptoms a family would notice at home.
