Newborn Feeding Cues: How to Tell Your Baby Is Getting Enough
Diaper counts, weight checks, and hunger cues that tell you feeding is going well, whether you breastfeed, formula feed, or both.
One of the most common questions we hear in the first weeks is simply, "Is my baby getting enough?" The reassuring answer is that your baby gives you daily evidence, and we track it together at every early visit.
Early hunger cues
- Stirring, mouth opening, and turning the head to search.
- Bringing hands to the mouth and rooting toward your chest.
- Crying is a late cue; feeding is easier before that point.
What good intake looks like
- Day 1 to 2: one to two wet diapers a day.
- Day 5 and beyond: six or more wet diapers and three or more stools a day.
- Weight loss of up to about 7 to 10 percent in the first days, with return to birth weight by about two weeks.
- Baby seems settled and releases the breast or bottle on their own after most feedings.
Breastfeeding, formula, or both
All three are valid ways to feed your baby. What matters is that feeding is comfortable, weight gain is steady, and your family feels supported. We are happy to talk through combination feeding, pumping, and bottle pacing at any visit.
Call us sooner if
- Your baby has fewer than four wet diapers a day after day five.
- Feedings consistently last longer than 45 minutes and end in frustration.
- You have nipple pain that does not improve with positioning changes.
- Your baby is unusually sleepy or hard to rouse for feeds.
